08/13/11 around ECI
« on: August 14, 2011, 01:04:08 PM »
Met up with MiniCooper and InPrinter and headed out to see what was going on.  The bridge work on Tillotson overpass (Muncie's west side) causes some holdup, and Saturday wasn't out of the norm.  The Q348 was the first train through it upon my arrival, although INPrinter had already been at the site and snagged a Ethanol train.
After the Q348 cleared CP230 the Pacer Stack train came down and headed west through the interlocking.  We decided to try and catch the NS251 at the Bunch Blvd bridge, and got there a few minutes ahead of the 251.

Since we heard the NS dispatcher say it was going to be dead after that and gave a permit to a welder, we headed east on the Indianapolis Line.  Getting setup at 200E, east of Winchester, we snagged the Q359 with the Spirit of Cincinnati leading.  Hearing more traffic we ran to Union City and got the Q349 and Q263 in the curve, and decided to head a bit east yet and as we did we missed a WB grain train.  Luckily INPrinter caught it out the window of the car.
Heading back west, we got the Q218 at 200E, east of Winchester, but by this time the sun was at the WRONG angle, as we debated the location for the best "worst" shot, we heard the horn, as the train passed, I told INPrinter "look, going away" and we turned to get a GOOD sun angle shot!  LOL
Heading for the races, we arrived back in Muncie and having heard the Q311 meeting the Q218 in Ansonia we had time to pick our spots in Muncie.  We settled on Perkins, as rumor has it the big NYC/PC era signal bridge at CP230 will be coming down Monday.  So I wanted to include it in a shot.  We snagged the Q311 as the storms clouds gathered over head.  After this we heard the NS 61N coming, but it was getting really dark, we set up for a night shot at Willard Street, my hopes were to catch the signal at 6th Street dropping.  However a nice group of bugs were flying around and killed the shot...oh well.  At this point a 174 was coming north and we needed to run to get John's tripod and as we headed down 8th street we could see the NASTY Lightning in the distance and decided to just call it a day...........No, no lightning shots from us!

Oh we did manage to grab the Point grinder parked on the NS Belt.

Since I was asked, here is the NS 61N night shot.
Several things, it was still light out just enough that anything over a 3 second exposure was "whiting out", so I set it at that length of time and then missed the timing on the shot to get the signal drop.
Plus you can see in some spots bugs flying around, not bad but its enough to see it.

Did you get any shots of that thing that looks like a switcher 4th out on 359?
The gates are going down and the people are starting to frown.

Still...pretty good. I love seeing those things. Avon had 1237, but I read it got shipped off to Mayland or something.

Seems like once a month you will catch one heading west toward Avon.

It's better than anything I've ever gotten, considering I've never shot one, but seen them multiple times.

Well, dittos on everything CIOR had to say earlier in the post. I won't be redundant but just try to post some of the pictures I got during the day. I have to say it was quite a trip and would do it again tomorrow(but I got to work). After we shut down for the day due to the impending severe weather approaching, I nearly got blown off the road by those straight line winds that preceded the actual storm front. It just seemed like that wind was not going to settle down. The dust cloud was almost a brown out.

Well, here's the pics:

So, that was a Point Grinder that spent a few days in Bluffton last week.  I thought it was too small to do much.

If you look closely at the photo of the brick tower in Union City you'll see a USC&GS benchmark in the wall near the corner.  I know it is there because it's the first vertical benchmark I ever had to use while surveying.

Yup, got a few shots of that benchmark.  I commented to INPrinter about it and he didn't get any close ups of it.  Shame on him.   ;D
