Please state your reason for voting what you did. I personally think that the operating musuems are the best, one because I am a volunteer and coach attendent for the Indiana Transportation Museum, and secondly, there is history along with the trains.

I like a operational museum, that you can see some of the stuff actually working.
I like to see as many things working as possible. So if a museum has trains running, documents/pictures available, signals, switches and that stuff that work, that is better. Then being able to ride quality equipment is top on the list as well.
Too many operational museums run junk when they could do a little work and make it look good.

Operating museums combine the best of both worlds, historical accuracy and interpretation with a trip somewhere.

We rode in the caboose for our sons birthday(dad liked it also) . Great to ride in or see the old equipment working. I think that has a good draw with the non-RR folks. I try to make it up there once a year. Keep up the good work!

Operating museums. The only place you can find history in action. Stuffed and mounted is better than nothing at all, but hands-on operations can really teach railroading.

I agree with Mike. I love preserved equipment and historical photos (great for research). THere's nothing like riding the vintage equipment, even for a few miles.

the museum has about 40 miles of operable track, 8 stainless steel coaches, a diner, two private cars, a GP7 and GP9, F7, and a SW1. We are currently working on Nickel Plate Road 587(2-8-2 Mikado) for being operational next year. Thanks for all who voted!

I like operating museums. That's why I joined the Indiana Transportation Museum. I like it because it has a variety of equipment and 38 miles to do a point to point run like in the old days. I also like getting the old equipment running. Right now we have the 587 project going (as mentioned above), Ex-Milwaukee Road F7 83C (72), and Santa Fe Budd Coach 3097 modernization (a work in progress).
