One of the newspaper articles about the plant relocation had a statement from the company to the effect that Pennsylvania is not a business friendly state.  A friend of mine from Pennsylvania agreed with that point and said that Harley was not the only company looking to get out of the state.

I'm kind of new to Shelby Co...been here 2 years.  Everyone knows that the Lexington area of Kentucky is horse country (the throughbred kind), but I never knew that Shelbyville KY is the standardbred horse capital of the world.

Train traffic-wise, I'd love to see anything but more auto-racks.  This area is Ford country, and although they have been down like everyone else for the past year+, I'm seeing a lot more rack trains these days on NS and CSX... Hopefully that is a sign of better economic times...but all those rack trains are boring.

I was through your fair city a month ago for the first time, and was very impressed.  I guess we'll see where Harley Davidson decides to go.  Murfreesboro TN is supposed to be the 3rd city in the running...  boo...  ;>)

John D,

Yes, it will be interesting to see how it turns out specially if HD winds up here. I don't know what the unemployment situation is down in Shelbyville, KY but we could certainly use some jobs around here. It's so bad locally that our Hispanic bretheren(for the most part) have left the neighborhood looking for employment elsewhere. I know that is not HD's main concern in deciding where to locate but it would be a blessing for local employment situation if they settle here.

I grew up in Covington, KY and my next door neighbor was an engineer for the Southern RR working the famous Rathole Division. I sort of grew up with the Southern RR and rode on several Southern passenger trains when I was a kid. I also remember my next door neighbor taking me down to Ludlow, KY where the train crews used to board the southbound trains out of Cincinnati headed for Danville, KY. Several times we went to Ludlow to see Southern's excursion passenger trains with those beautiful Green, Silver and Gold lettered steam engines. Even got to climb into the cab of one of them. Wasn't allowed to blow the whistle or drive the train though.

Have a good day.

Yeah, I can remember about 10 12 years ago I used to ride in the Engine on the CIND, they used to change out cars at the Sunman Siding and the guys would always let me in for a few rides back and forth while they exchanged cars... good times. One time they even let us go down to Greendale with them and they dropped us off behind Ameristop.. it took us about 2 hours back then!! Pretty neat too bad it was at night.

You'd be surprised at how companies look at available labor in their location decisions.  I think it was in an article about Hyundai's plant in the south where they said they wanted to be X miles from another auto plant, to keep wages DOWN since they wouldn't have to compete on wages with another auto company.  That's why the BMW plant in Spartanburg SC is far away from Daimler's plant in Tuscaloosa AL and Hyundai is in Montgomery AL.

It's not like here in Warsaw where the main industry is orthopaedic implants (you know, knees, hips, etc.) and people move from one company to another following the $$$.

I heard on the business news on WFYI this morning that Harley Davidson is NOT coming to Indiana. The Shelby County site has been eliminated from consideration.

There is a little article in the Indy Star this morning about it.
They list a laundry list of reasons from a business standpoint, most being mechanical (utilities and such).
