Danville, old "twin bridge" abutment
« on: September 08, 2005, 09:13:47 AM »
In Danville Indiana, there is a huge concrete arch railroad bridge just east of town that overshadows an old iron truss road bridge.  The road that goes under it is Twin Bridge Road.  Many people today assume that the road name comes from the proximity of the two bridges.

However, as they were originally built, the road bridge was directly under the old Big 4 truss bridge.  If I remember the photos I've seen right, there wasn't a lot of space between the top of the road bridge and the bottom of the railroad bridge.  At the time, the road was a main road into town from the east, so it would have been one grand entryway.

The old truss bridge was removed around 1906 when the new concrete bridge was built as part of a massive rebuilding of the entire route.  Evidence of the old line still remains.  The attached photo is of the remaining abutment for the old railroad truss bridge, located just to the west end of the road bridge.  Also still existing are a concrete culvert and fill just to the south of new US 36 and some cuts to the south of town.

And a photo of the road bridge, just since it's cool to look at.
