Indiana Terminal Warehouse
« on: September 06, 2005, 10:58:52 PM »
I've mentioned the Indiana Terminal Warehouse at the corner of Georgia and Pennsylvania (Indianapolis) on this board before. I actually got a chance to photograph it the other day.

The interurban access at street level are now roll-up doors.  I'm not sure what CSX, the current owner, keeps in there.

The railroad dock on the second floor are now bricked up.  However, the dock was not built with a side wall (there was a tall building to the south side at the time the ITW was built), and so now one can see directly into where boxcars were spotted.

As far as I could find, there are no other traces of either the interurban or the railroad overpass.  That overpass was torn down in the mid-90's as part of Conseco Fieldhouse construction.

A closeup view of where the track bumper was on the second floor. Behind the guy smoking is a barbeque.

Was this warehouse used for LCL? Pre-IRR, which interurban/s dropped cars here?

I don't know about the LCL.  My guess would be that it could handle carloads and served as a distribution point for downtown businesses that couldn't have their own railroad siding. I'm not sure whether the interurban (I think all lines had access to the terminal) handled mostly LCL or carloads.

My knowledge of the existence of this building comes from Jerry Marlette's book "Indianapolis Railways".  I don't think Jerry reads this board, but perhaps someone else who does can share some information...

Here are photos of the building in use: Indiana Historical Society Images

I wonder if the Indiana Refrigeration Co. shared the dock with the ITW.  If so, that would explain the lack of a wall on the south end of the building. Or perhaps the IRC was there, and the ITW built around their existing dock trackage...

Nathan Bilger:

Thanks for the photos. The sixth one down was especially interesting: it showed what appears to be a round-end interurban freight trailer on the curve into the warehouse.

Is this the building the Conrail Indianapolis Division headquarters was in?
It seems to look familiar.
I tried for a conductor job and applyed/interviewd there back in the mid to late 90's.

I think it was.  It's now CSX.  They still use it as an office, but I'm not sure which offices exactly are housed in there.

The north side of the building (Georgia St) has a CSX sign on it.
