Updating my Indiana railroad map.
« on: January 12, 2009, 07:13:57 AM »
I have a Delorme atlas that mark all the changes to Indiana's rail lines on. I have drawn in all of the abandoned routes in red ink. While referencing the map yesterday, I decided some updates are in order, and I have a couple of questions. 1) Is the line to Winamac torn out all the way to the TP&W connection, or is there a stub left? The Virtual Earth ariels shown it out only as far south as Royal Center. 2) Is there anything left of the line between Kokomo and Peru? Once again, Virtual Earth seems to indicate tracks in as far north as Cassville. As I review the rest of the map, I may have a few more questions. Thanks if you can help.  :)

The A&R line is gone from the TP&W junction to Winamac completly. This line is becoming the Panhandle Pathway trail.
The old IMC line is correct as the line ends just South of Cassville and is gone to Peru. That line is becoming the Nickel Plate Trail. Jay

Thanks for the info. My next question concerns the former NYC between Chicago and Danville IL. Here's what I show...

South to Schneider: In service (NS)

Schneider to Ade: Mostly intact, Out of service.

Ade to Kentland: In service, (TP&W?)

Kentland to Sheff: Mostly intact, out of service. It looks like there was a connting track in the NW quadrant at Sheff. Correct?

Sheff to Free: In service (KB&S)

Free to Handy: Out of service, mostly intact. Handy Tower still standing?

Handy to Stewart: In service, (KB&S)

Stewart to Danville: ???? Ariel photo resolution too poor to see track status.

I welcome corrections, additions and any further info on this line.

Handy tower was still there in 2007 when I took some pictures of it:

I thought I read that the line from Danville, IL to the Indiana state line was torn up by CSX, and from the state line to Stewart it's just sitting there in place.
