Get photos of the "old".

In Grant County, over Central RR of Indy. 3 miles west of S.R. 26.

In Marshall County, new US 31 bridge over Elkhart Western RR.

No replacement bridge in Marshall County, it is an at grade crossing.  This crossing has been the site of numerous accidents, but very few trains involved.  Most accidents are caused by trucks and buses doing the regulatory stop for the crossing and then getting rear ended.  Had one fuel truck accident about two weeks ago with no serious injuries. The last fatally was a school bus last winter or spring, a truck hit the bus and a student was killed.  US31 curves slightly, but if the driver is paying attention there is plenty of room to stop.

Does anybody know how often or when E&W crosses 31? I've never seen a train actually crossing there.

Not sure, but it seems like about three round trips per week.

I'm confused since SR 26 is an East-West highway.  Can you be more specific, like near what town?

It use to cross in Hartford city but NS abandoned that section.  Perhaps SR22, overpass in Upland.  There was rumors it was to be replaced then placed on hold when the lines future was up in the air

Yep,the only reason the line is still there is that RailAmerica saw enough value in the line to buy it. Funny thing is, the only customer at the time they bought it was PCA in Gas City. They're lucky Petoskey and Shalee Oils came to Hartford City because PCA has turned their backs on rail. Gas City has received next to nothing in months.
