Monon box car at Chesterton
« on: September 23, 2019, 12:08:30 PM »
In Chesterton, at a  park alongside the Chicago Line, a Monon box car and NS caboose are on display.  I didn't recognize the paint scheme for the box car.  Can any of you Monon guys tell me if this is an genuine MON scheme?  (Obviously the number displayed is not authentic.)

The box car is not just a display item; it serves (ahem) a vital function.  The second photo was taken on the other side of the car.  A high level boarding platform is alongside it to provide access.  Access to what?  Half of the car is a women's restroom and the other half is for men.  The third photo shows the men's room: two urinals and a toilet stall.  It was spotlessly clean.  You could have performed open heart surgery there.

Hope none of our Monon devotees are outraged about the purpose of the car.

I was just up there and saw it last week.  I love the effort, but I REALLY wish they would have chosen an authentic paint scheme.  The caboose is nice, but once again it is of a type that certainly never served under NS, maybe not even any of the NS predecessor lines.

Well, at least it serves a purpose again.  Beats cutting it up for scrap.

I agree, I just can't figure out why if you are going to as much trouble as they obviously did, why not get it right?

I guess the car ultimately found use as a slop freight. ;D

You could say the same thing about UP's heritage units.  Maybe if they and the box car were in a rail museum you would have a point.  But they're not and there's no obligation to slavishly imitate the originals.  Frankly, the car looks better to my eyes than anything I can recall from the Monon's heyday, and the same goes for the UP units.

I think the red scheme with white lettering and The Hoosier Line across the top would have looked quite nice.

Surely y'all don't expect them to paint a boxcar IU HOOSIER colors up in what is clearly known as PURDUE territory !!! ;D
I think it's nifty!  Not everything has to be "historically accurate!"

The only change I would have made is to identify the car as "No. 1" or "No. 2"  ;D

Very true but there’s a lot of IU fans up this way.  Makes for some good times

But the irony is they aren't Purdue or IU colors...they are DePauw and Wabash colors.
