Why move it?  It would make a great train watching location as-is, where-is.  Just needs Air-conditioning and an underground access so fans don't have to trespass on live tracks.  (sorry, I didn't win the lottery, either)

'Cause where it is right now is ON railroad property? Like, right smack dab in the middle of the heart of CSX property, and if a train hit the dirt while passing a tower full of foam and took it down, the moms/dads/brothers/sisters/cousins of said foamers would sue the bejezus out of CSX?

None of those are on railroad property...

AC Tower is on station property.  It was moved there.

Iron Triangle is on the site of an old factory

Deshler is a town owned park

Horseshoe Curve is National Park Service land.

Indeed, CSX had supposedly offered the Deshler Depot to the community - if it is moved across the Willard Sub and "re-planted" in Crossroads Park. As for the park itself, it was fortunate that the land was never railroad owned, otherwise it wouldn't have been possible.

Mega millions in lottery winnings would be better spent on dividend stocks and enough real estate to go hide somewhere and never work again. With that said you'd have enough money left over to build a railfan park or two with an observation building similar to a modern yard tower on steroids.

That park alone would do more for the railfan community than trying to salvage any lone tower or depot IMO.

With tunnel access, surely CSX would write you a Lease for the mega million balance of your Lotto winnings.

Update:  A trackhoe and bobcat equipment have shown up trackside next to the tower.  Rumor has it, that it will be on the ground tomorrow and cleaned up by Monday  . . . . . Time and progress must move us all along at some point.

I was in IU briefly back in the 80's so don't remember much. If it is built like most brick railroad buildings it won't fall willingly. They were built to last and hold up to a lot of vibration/abuse.

They brought in a wrecking ball vs track hoe to demolish Haley the day we moved it!

Demo gang is in town, tore down an old building in Hawthorne ast Tuesday.  Supposed to head to Anderson for more work after IU tower is down.  It wonít take them long.

Demo crew went to Anderson this week and knocked down a building finishing today.  Said to be on the way to IU first thing in the morning.

Checked on the way to the office and the rumors appear to be true.  A contractor was onsite taking pictures of the building at 7:30am.  I was hoping to get a shot of one last train passing by but no luck.  Just a cloudy morning shot for her last sunrise.

Once upon a time CSX had a contractor who went on site and documented every building that was razed along with its history. I wonder if that is still the corporate policy.

CSX could have kept the Tower for MOW to use.

Why?

Nice track department garage at Avon.  Signals has a newer building out there too.

IU no-where bear as complex as the 40ís, and even less complex than just 5 years ago.

I wish I could find the exact tax bill for the tower.  Being in Marion county i bet it wasnít cheap. Let alone upkeep and energy costs for just 1 maintainer.
