Outbound crew was already on duty. I'm guessing they could recrew the train. Probably took a while to get a crew to go to the Grove and bring an engine downtown and switch out the damaged unit. But 9 hrs? I'm guessing their was some freight interference involved too.

I thought that someone said that they had to turn the Locomotive so it could go East on the Cardinal. Also someone also stated that if the Ditch Lights were not Working, He had to Operate on Restricted Speed, I beleive 10 MPH to Union Station.

It was reported earlier in the thread that the ditch lights weren't damaged. So the train could operate at track speed once released by the police and the coroner unless some restriction was imposed by CSX or Amtrak. The engine coming out of the Grove could be easily turned on the Belt on its way down to the station.

They had to cut the plow off the engine and get a replacement from Beech Grove. The damaged unit is now in the middle of 851 ready for departure tomorrow morning.

From the Photo on the News, It looks like the Driver went around a Crossing with Gates. This just goes to Show that it, "Does Not Matter If A Crossing has Gates or Not", Drivers will continue to go on Through the Crossings with Flashers or Crossings with Gates and Even Ones with a Cross Buck and Stop Sigh. The State needs to get Strict on Cities and Towns that Do Not Start Enforcing Grade Crossing Law IC 9-21-8-39. Look at the Car Train at Troy Ave on CSX that Q 206 Hit that went around Stopped Cars and the Flashers were activated. When is this going to Stop. This has been going on for way to long.

In Indianapolis, we do enforce 9-21-8-39.  However, when a single officer has to work a beat the size of Delaware, there are other responsibilities that take precedence over traffic enforcement.  How exactly is the state going to get strict on municipalities regarding the grade crossing law????  Besides, no one from state/local government seems to care when the excessively long Louisville rack trains endanger public safety on a daily basis, specifically by blocking the all grade crossings along Mass Avenue for excessively long periods of time.  It happens every single day.  So, why would they care about 9-21-8-39???

Surprised no one has mentioned it yet, but this seems like a perfect opportunity for the despised "red light cameras".  Sure, you can't charge the driver personally, since the driver of a car in question is almost always unidentifiable, but the camera offenses are handled like parking tickets, going to the registered owner of the vehicle.  If the owner wasn't driving it that day, he surely knows who was. The law takes the fine from the owner, and it's up to the owner to go after whoever he allowed to be driving his car...and be sure the fine is hefty!  If they can get upwards of $100 for a red light, then the sky's the limit, as far as I'm concerned, for crossing violations...MAYBE this would reduce incidents like the one that triggered this thread...
