NYC Mahalaville Depot
« on: February 21, 2019, 01:24:54 PM »
Does anyone know or have any Information about the NYC Depot in Mahalaville Indiana on the Fairland, Franklin and Martinsville Railroad. I have heard that the Depot had caught fire and the Operator had died in the Fire. The operator was JL Robinson and went by Leonard. This was in the Late 1800 or Early 1900 when this happened. I have also heard the Mill in Mahalaville had caught Fire around that time as well. A friend has told me that his Grandmother had said the JL Robinson had died in a Fire at the Depot.

I purchased the Fairland, Franklin, and Martinsville book.

Having read through it, the surthor didn’t mention a fire.

The section about the ICC 1915 valuation lists Malhalaville “depot” as an old box car.

So, if it had originally had a real depot, it didn’t exist by 1915.

I've searched the newspaper files and this is the only thing I could find about Mahalasville...

In 1895 it was a regular stop (not a flag stop)
In 1910 no agent was listed

Didn't see any building info on audits

1925: Construct loading platform.
1926: Retire Freight house, cinder platform & loading platform.
1927: Construct cinder platform.
1937: Retire 310 ft track, #29, New length 445ft. (Banta: Why a new 445ft track, when things were declining by then? This end of line abandoned five years later.
Not a note about the depot itself?
