Feds extend deadline on New Albany-Bedford trail
« on: February 15, 2019, 10:24:53 AM »
The STB and CSX have given New Albany more time to buy the ex-Monon corridor from the city to Bedford and convert it to a trail.

I guess that block signal in Mitchell will stay red for another year while they work it out.  It's hasn't changed in 5 years.  All of the block signals north of the Pillsbury plant in New Albany are off.  The crossing signals are still powered all the way to Bedford though most of them look like they are barely standing up.

I remember that block signal in Roachdale sat in yellow for almost 3 or 4 years before they finally had it disconnected.

Is there any chance of the rsils to be saved at this time

Doubt it. CSX wants it gone. They don't care if it becomes a trail if they get their dough. But as a functioning railroad?  Not a chance.

Why would csx care if this section of the monon gets sold or not as long ad they get there money the only interchange point is with csx at mitchell unless you go to new albany and interchange with ns not much traffic would be generated on this line as much of the industries have left might get a lot of grain traffic but would have to put rails bank in at most of the places maybe a factory or two if rail service reinstated

There isn't a logical money explanation for it, but CSX allegedly wants this line gone and torn up with the same fervor that Conrail wanted the Pensy torn out and gone between Limedale and Terre Haute, even after a shortline picked it up.

Has there every been a casewhere the rails have been pulled converted to a trail and thenhave the rails put back in service

Might be referring to RJ Corman reactivating an old Conrail line that was railbanked/trailed:

I could swear I'd read of a handful of others but dug this up after a quick search.

Short of some kind of customer showing up that generates thousands of cars a year, it wonít be back.

The line has been pretty much doomed since it was built.  Really doomed when L&N got the Monon and not the Southern.

Here's a fun hypothetical: if Southern had gotten the Monon, which alignment would they have kept, Salem or French Lick?

Seems to be more warmth to the stove abiut a shipper on the south end, but that isnt the bulk of it.
