« on: August 21, 2018, 08:21:53 PM »
I am a lonely F - unit and by now you know that I am a former Western Maryland Rwy. a.k.a. Wild Mary ;D Can you tell me which town and railroad yard I am located in?? The results may be surprising.

Looks like the Monon Indianapolis yard, but I'm probably incorrect.

That's what I was going to say.  I grew up along the former Decatur Sub west of Indy and can recall seeing WM units once in a great while on the line.

if it is in Mitchell, Western Maryland was part of the Chessie System as was the B&O through Mitchell.

That was one of the more interesting parts of the Chessie merger.

Western Maryland was crazy about maintaining and upgrading their power. To the point that they rebuilt these to pretty much GP18 specs internally. AAR control stands, 1800HP prime movers, new traction motors. They kept things in tip top shape. So when chessie got all these units. They were often much better condition then later purchased B&O units. Most ran until 1979 and were still in good shape. Chessie traded them in and most of the upgraded stuff is still probably riding around on CSX GP40-2s. Chessie got almost half the price knocked off a GP40-2 because the high number of reused components.

They also chopnosed GPs before it became the thing to do.

WM also ran TWO five chimes on top of the loco. Both sounded at once. And you hoggers thought your unit was loud.
If in doubt, Notch it out!

The last hint was to signify the amount of different railroads that use to come through this town at one time. So now to the new hint: Most of this area is long gone, or is it???

Still a big "NO." Looks like I need to drop another hint photo, as you can see my younger cousin is parked in about the same spot as I am.

This looks familiar, but the brain isn't making the connection.
I want to say Star City or North Judson, but they don't fit the 7 and rivers clues.

Looks like it is time for another photo hint: I'm in the same yard, but the sanding tower is behind me. You woul think rivers and cannonballs would give you the answer easily.

I want to report to you all that IndyKing has finally nailed it. This is the former Wabash Rwy. yard at Peru, IN. All photos taken for this trivia posting were taken by Bruce Emmons, they are out of my collection.

That is not exactly a younger cousin. Like i said. A lot of the parts from the above WM F7 units reused on the WM GP40-2 order. (Control stand, brake parts, trucks, traction motors, a host of minor parts).

So what your looking at here is 20% an F7A. Possible even the exact F7A pictured previously. So its quite possible the two units pictured share many of the same parts.

This is an WM BL2, but it shows the modern control stand WM fitted the units with. The BL2s retained the old brake stand however, which is why they never got traded in.
