Penn Central Presentation

On Sunday April 8, 2018 at 2PM, Roger Hensley will present a Power Point presentation, "PennCentral, the Penn Central Railroad" in the Bowman room of the History center at 11 West 11th Street in Anderson, Indiana. The presentation will briefly cover the History of the New York Central and the Pennsylvania Railroads leading up to the merger of the railroads. The majority of the Penn Central years will follow with a brief section of CR, and then CSX and NS portions at the end.

The ill fated Penn Central was only in existence from February 1,  1968 to April 1, 1976 when it was replaced by Conrail. The original merger of the NYC and PRR railroads was first proposed in 1957 during informal discussions between Robert R. Young of the NYC and James Symmes of the PRR.  It was officially announced in 1964, after the purchase of the B&O by the C&O and the merger of N&W, Nickel Plate and Wabash.

Immediately, the railroad merger was handicapped by old outmoded rules that the railroad could not get around and the fact that it desperately needed to drop the duplicate tracks of both railroads going to the same places. Additionally, the merger was ordered to take in other bankrupt railroads. And the Red and Green teams had different methods of operation and could not agree on many of the problems that came up.
So come out and enjoy the presentation of railroad history at the History Center in Anderson on Sunday April 8, 2018 at 2PM. You can park in the lot across the street. All are welcome and there is no charge at any of the History Center programs. After the program, the Train Room will be open for you to see if you wish.
