Marion District Action on a Busy Sunday Evening - 2/18/18
« on: February 19, 2018, 09:00:17 PM »
Heading back to Indy I happened to catch several freights on the Marion District between Leesburg and Claypool.

Pic 1 - 4:40pm a northbound manifest lead by an NS ET44AC and two Canadians pulls out of the Leesburg siding past the grain elevator.  Apparently had been waiting in the hole for quite awhile waiting for a southbound gon train loaded with steel.

Pic 2 - 4:55pm Northbound L42 enters the south end of Leesburg siding, cleared to re-enter the main at North Leesburg after passing the gon train.

Pic 3 - 5:15pm the Southbound is on the move taking the high green at South Leesburg

I would end the chase in Claypool as the southbound gon train took the connection onto the Chicago District at 6pm to head east to Fort Wayne.  Shortly after a northbound manifest passes a waiting NS 368.  After waiting to see if 368 would finally get the signal to get back on the main a PTI van showed up and the crew was getting off the head end.  368 arrived in Marion at 11:30am with just the CN unit leading and after making an 81 car pick up along with a second unit left only to make it as far as Claypool before needing a recrew.

Lots of trains died this weekend getting into Elkhart from the east.  Not surprised it ended up going that far south

Sad to see those PRR signals lying in a pile like that.

Hopefully some got saved. Alas the price of progress.  :-\
