4014 in the Chicago area
« on: July 27, 2019, 11:23:26 PM »
Yeah, I know it's not in Indiana but thought you might want a photo of Big Boy 4014.  Shot by my friend and retired railroad GM Doug Weitzman, 4014 muscles its way thru the crowd at Elmhurst station on UP's ex-CNW Geneva sub.  Photo taken on Friday as the engine was on its way to West Chicago for display.  It will stay there Saturday, Sunday and Monday, then depart west on Tuesday morning, July 30.

Thanks. I am heading up to West Chicago on Monday. Should be less crowded.

Wouldn't be something to see the Big Boy 4014, The Challenger 3985 and the 4-8-4 844 Triple Headed. I know Wishful Thinking.

I would love to see her in person! Unfortunately, I'm not able to make my way there. Too bad she wouldn't be down in this area.

It is a shame that Norfolk Southern ended their steam program. Seeing the 1218 come through Argus in the late 80's was a real treat. That is the closest thing in Indiana railfanning to seeing a Challenger or Big Boy. I was actually more impressed by the 1218 than the Challenger.

UP 3985 played dress up and mascaraeded as Clinchfield 676 to run CSXT's annually Santa Express in 1992.  She returned to UP Rails at E St Louis vis the Indiana and Illinois Sub.  I was dispatcher on duty when she came out of Queensgate and got to line her thru the Oklahoma plant (that CIND Dispatcher controls).  Then saw her an hour later from the CIND office as she came thru Lawrenceburg.
The opinions, views, and incoherent ramblings presented here do not necessarily represent the view point of any company I work for or own,  any logical thinking being, or even me.

Wow, scraphauler. I had no idea that 3985 came east that long ago. First I saw  her was when she made a run to Chicago on the C&NW around 2003 or so. I caught her just west of Rochelle, Il.

We caught it in Seymour on the Return Trip to St Louis when it made the Stop there. That was something else to see.

I saw the 844 first and marveled at the size... Huge.  WOW!

Then I had a chance to see the 3985 and again marveled at the size, but for the opposite reason; it was much smaller than I expected!  (True, bigger than the 844, but not as big as I was expecting.  The term 'Pocket battleship' came time mind.)

Tuesday and Wednesday, I get to see the 4014 and I am wondering how I will feel about its size.

Thanks Steve....you know how to make a guy feel old as dirt.  LOL!   I was 10 years out of high school when I caught it at Vincennes.  Can you believe that I actually found out it was coming by reading the local newspaper!  Then made a few telephone calls to some friends to coordinate what to do.  How did we survive back then?  At least I didn't have to chase it on horseback!  Challenger stayed overnight at Vincennes just east of the CE&D diamond.  It was COLD the morning it left Vincennes!!

My grandpa and dad watched them go east into Salem. They were on the phone with my uncle, who got on the radio with the crew and asked where they were at. Turns out they were supposed to stop for water right outside my grandparent's backdoor at the colorpress plant, but instead they decided to stop the train downtown.

Chased it across Illinois yesterday into Iowa.  Saw it 4 different times, including the shot I wanted. This is at Nelson, IL-a steam engine passing under a coaling tower. (Yes, the 4014 runs on oil, but you get the idea...)(And please pardon the amateur quality...)

That would definitely be a sight! All that steam!
