2008 Great Lakes Region Railroad Modelers Symposium

I said it a few months ago and now were only a week and half away and here is the info:

2008 Great Lakes Region Railroad Modelers Symposium
Friday and Saturday April 18th and 19th

South Bend Firefighters Association, 4025 Lincoln Way West, South Bend IN 46628
Cost will be $15 for one day, $20 for both.

The St Joe Valley Model Railroad Club is proud to be co-sponsoring the Great Lakes Region Railroad Modelers Symposium in-conjunction with Jim Six. Please take a look at what we have planned for this year. If you have any questions, feel free to contact us.

The focus of this 2-day symposium will be "Modeling a Railroad", not just rolling stock and locomotives! Both evenings feature three 90-minute presentations on popular prototype-based layouts. Both days are jam-packed with how-to seminars. Please review the listing of presentations and seminars below and you will see a wide variety of fantastic topics.

Friday Seminars include:

Scratch building Switches
9:00 AM
Tony Sissons will show you how to scratch build switches. Building switches is not a difficult task and can really help in operations, as well as save you some valuable layout money.


Building Craftsman Structure Kits
10:30 AM
Scott Mason will help you in building those Craftsman Structure Kits that are sitting on your shelves.


Designing and Building a Prototype Based Layout
12:00 Noon
Art Hall will help you design a layout based on a prototype. Come see how to go about designing and building that layout based on real locations


Modeling with Photoshop
1:30 PM
All of us have seen Jim Six photos. Are they real or are they Photoshop. Come see how Jim improves models and layouts with the software.


Installing DCC and Sound
3:00 PM
Rick Bell will help us install DCC and Sound decoders in our equipment. Come see the tricks he uses.


Building an Industrial Switching Layout
4:30 PM
Lance Mindheim will show us how to build an Industrial Switching layout. Many of us want plenty of switching, but can't figure out the best way. Let Lance help you out.


Modeling Conrail in Northeast Pennsylvania
7:00 PM
Mike Rose will be showing off his Northeast Pennsylvania Layout. Come see some real eastern railroading.


Building the Nickle Plate
8:30 PM
Tony Koester will be showing off his new Nickle Plate layout for us. Come and see the new layout.

Rick Bell will help you getting your film and slides digitized.


Better Model Railroad Photography

Kyle Engelmann will help you improve the photos you shoot of your layout. Come and see how they pro's do it.


Tools, Tips, and Techniques
12:00 Noon
Come see Mont Switzers famous Tools, Tips, and Techniques seminar. Mont uses his years of modeling to help you with what tools and skills are needed.

Modeling the PRR Vandalia Branch

Come see the spectacular layout Tom Johnson has built. This is not the same railroad that was seen in the 2008 Great Model Railroads. Tom has reworked it since the article was written.


Modeling the NYC Michigan Branch
8:30 PM
Here's the one we're all waiting for. Jim Six will fill us in on what he's been doing on his Northern Indiana layout.

Several hotels within walking distance of the meet. Also 1 mile away from the South Bend Regional Airport/South Shore Station.

Hey all heres an update for those attending. You may preregister at the meeting hall or at the SJV Clubhouse on Thursday the 17th from 7pm - 9pm.
