Abandoned I-65 overpass in Indy
« on: April 14, 2015, 02:47:33 PM »
I've driven under this more times than I could ever count.   Finally got up on a side street to take a look across just south of the corner of Bates and S. Pine St.

I know nothing about it's history, who owned it, when it was last used, etc.      Please fill me in.

Thanks.

It's last use wasn't too long ago. It was used as a dead end seasaw for headroom to get into an industry off bates. The bridge was refurbed during hyperfix.

It used to be a warehouse lead. You can still see the HUMP in the street in East Street just east of the Anthem building where it crossed many years ago.

I know a few folks at ITM eye it now an again. They want to move this bridge to replace the missing one at 10th street.
If in doubt, Notch it out!

Red is the long abandoned portion, yellow is the more recently abandoned portion.
If in doubt, Notch it out!

It used to be the Borinstein Railroad, which served the industries on either side of East Street and North of Louisiana Street, especially in the area now occupied by Anthem.  For more information and discussion about this bridge and railroad, check out these two threads:

Also, if you look at the historic aerial photography at MapIndy (http://maps.indy.gov/Mapindy/), you can see the extent of the previous trackwork in the views from 1986 and earlier.
Cheers, Al
