Sanborn maps
« on: June 21, 2005, 11:26:44 PM »
Sanborn Fire Insurance maps were created from the 1880s to the 1950s for most urban areas of the country. They show in great detail the building construction, size, etc. More importantly to rail historians, they also showed tracks within the urban area of the time. So it is possible to figure out track plans for long gone shops, yards, etc, as well as get an idea of what industries were served. This is useful for modelers too, as the maps give the building footprints that could be used as a starting point for a model.

I just found out that all IU libraries have access to all available maps for Indiana. IU Bloomington also has access to all maps nationwide.
