Fair Train 2014
« on: July 17, 2014, 04:45:14 PM »
Does anyone know if the Nickle Plat F Unit will be used on the Fair Train this Year. The GP and the F on the other end would sure look good working together. Even though the Nickle Plate Never had any F Units. And what are the Dates it will be Running.

The 2014 FairTrain consist will include ITMZ#83 currently painted in the NKP passenger paint scheme.  The other locomotive will be ITMZ#200 for a while, POSSIBLY switching to 426 later, depending on when its current maintenance items are done.  Train schedule (August 1-17) & fares can be found here:

http://itm.org/event/fairtrain/2014-08-01/

BUT we will be adding a 10th round-trip to provide a late departure from the Fair (11:45 PM) on the nights when concerts will be taking place at the Fairgrounds (they are moved back to the Fairgrounds this year).

Please be aware that the layout in Fishers is very different this year due to the impending demolition of Fishers Train Station (but the platform itself will remain) and other construction.  This year the train will board north of the platform, behind the former BMV building.  There is a tent and temporary restrooms erected there.  Come and see the newly-extended Fishers Siding, the new ties and surfacing, and the new 4-lane crossing that has been built north of the station platform (but the street itself will not be open until September).

I was told over the Weekend that there May Not Be A Fair Train this Year. Is there any Truth to this?

None whatsoever.

FairTrain operated out of Fishers for several years in the early 1990s with no buildings in place along the tracks north of 116th Street, using a rented tent and temporary restrooms.  Here's an aerial pic from 1994 (copy-and-paste the link below, clicking on it doesn't seem to work):

http://gis.hamiltoncounty.in.gov/FlexViewer/index.html?xy=230219,1715860&scale=4800&layers=$v2%7C1994%20Aerial%5B1.00%5B%5B%5Blabelson%5Boplayerson

It was done then and will be done again now.

It seems like every year there is a newspaper or tv story saying that. Until ITM releases something official, I wouldn't trust it very far.

Why do we get these same rumors every year?

It is allways something, track conditions, utility easement under row, INRD derails just before fair time.

I mean i guess it's just the fud factor of trying to reopen an row that is not used most of the year.

I guess that was one good thing about inrd running coal trains, you knew the row was ready.

If in doubt, Notch it out!

If the tracks further south were still usable, I would take a train to the fair from the south side in a heartbeat. Then again, I can also imagine the fit CSX would throw over fair trains crossing that diamond...

We get these same rumors every year because some people choose to state unconfirmed opinions as though they were fact.  Here are some facts:

Track conditions between Fishers and the Fairgrounds are much improved this year, thanks to $600,000 of work that was done last Fall via HHPA and INDOT using Federal funds.  New ties were installed, ballast was added, surfacing work was performed, and some degree of superelevation was removed in the curves since track speed is 25-30 MPH rather than 50.  ITM has spent the spring and summer replacing the broken bond wires that inevitably result from such track work.  So, track conditions are not an issue.  This year's Fairtrain passengers can expect a noticeably smoother ride.

A work train operated yesterday evening from Noblesville to 39th St for rust-busting and brush-cutting.  On July 13 a charter was operated from 39th St to Fishers and back.  Tomorrow there is another charter operating the entire operable length of the line (39th St to Tipton) for the Lionel Collectors Club of America.  So there has been no problem in getting the right-of-way south of Fishers prepared for constant activity.

Also, this year the major concerts return to the Fairgrounds.  On those dates (Tue Aug 5, Wed Aug 6, Fri Aug 8, Sat Aug 9, Sun Aug 17) the Fairtrain will operate an additional late-night departure from the Fairgrounds at 11:45 PM to accommodate concert-goers.  On all other dates the last departure from the Fairgrounds is at 10:15 PM.

P.S.  It wasn't always wine-and-roses when the coal trains were operating.  Photos from July 2000.

They stopped when the power plant stopped using coal (just West of SR37 North of Noblesville at 211th St.)

. . . which was in December 2002.

The wye was named Davin Wye after John Davin, who was president of the Nickel Plate RR from 1942-49.  The wye still exists and is used by ITM to turn equipment.  The east leg extends far enough east of SR 19 (between Noblesville and Cicero) to be able to store some equipment, but that is not currently the case.

There is a power plant north of Noblesville, and when NS sold this line to HHPA, INRD got the freight traffic rights for the line, which at the time was only the one customer. In 2002, the power plant switched from coal to natural gas, eliminating the need for freight service. I do not know if INRD still holds the rights.

CSX did not remove the diamonds until 2010.
