Monon Bridge over Wildcat Creek, status?
« on: November 08, 2007, 02:38:53 AM »
I was just curious if the former Monon Bridge over the Wildcat Creek on the Indy line was still standing? I haven't see any updates for a while on it's status. For those unfamiliar with this story, this bridge was severely damaged last year when high waters destabilized one of the pier supports, making the bridge out of alignment and ready to topple at any time. With the recent storms and wind, I wondered if it was still intact. Thanks for any help! Jay

Took a while to find the wbsite. I have been curious of the same thing. Nobody has replied so far. Here is the only information that I know of .

http://bridgehunter.com/in/carroll/wildcat-rr/

Also there are more photos at the bottom of the page under view attachment.

I understand the bridge is on private property from both ends.

 Anyone live near the area??

As of April 15, 2007 this trestle was still standing, but it appears it won't be for long. The abutment in the center of the creek moved during high water earlier this spring, and these photos show the result. Looks to me like it will only take one more good rain and this one will be coming down!

Two of fourteen photos...

NW Central Indiana,
SR-26 - half-way between Lafayette and Kokomo is a town called Rossvile,
Take US-421/SR-39 north,
Old Monon r-o-w runs parallel along eastside of highway,
after 4 miles the r-o-w splits off into town called Owasco

Bridge is 1/2 mile north of Owasco

Reminds me of the IC bridge over the Wabash between Griffin, Indiana and Grayville, Illinois.

Their is another long bridge closer to Delphi, known as 'High Bridge', that still exist today as well. For more info, check out this website http://www.monon.monon.org/bygone/main.html where their are profiles for most of the Monon lines, including pictures of High Bridge and the Wildcat Creek bridge from years past as trains roll over them, plus some recent photos of the abandoned sections. Thanks for everyone's replys, Jay

I've appreciated the photos and the discussion about the old bridge.  I'm going to be down in Lafayette this weekend and I'd like to visit the site.  Is the old Monon R-O-W within sight of US421/SR39 to be able to find the bridge location?  Some directions on reaching the site would be most appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

Dan, basically find State Road 26 in Lafayette and go East towards Kokomo. At Rossville there is a 4 way blinking stoplight which is where 421/39 intersect. Turn Left(North) and follow the highway towards Owasco. I haven't been down that road since before they tore out the line, but I don't remember being able to see the bridge location from the road even back then.
By the way, if you go just a little East of that 4 way signal on 26, you will soon cross over the old ROW, which if you look North you could see one of the old semaphore signals standing next to a business. The business bought it when the line was ripped out and I believe they moved it back onto their property a bit, but still near the old ROW. It was still there last time I was through there, about 2-3 years ago. Good luck, Jay

Is this the Pinafore you were referring. I snapped this picture last year sometime when I was returning from Monon or Delphi. I just happened to glance North as I was crossing the old ROW and noticed it. I had to turn around and get a picture. There are others just North of Orleans right along 37 by the municipal water tower at the north end of the double-track section.

As far as the semaphores at orleans they are out of service as the buried code line was stolen a while back.

Inprinter, I can't be sure from your picture. I will have to get back over that way and take another look soon. Funny, I used to drive 26 nearly everyday coming and going to work and never thought about stopping and grabbing a pic. I was always preoccupied with remembering the old mainline as it was, especially when they tore out the siding, and would drive right on by. Hopefully it is still there. Heck I still miss hearing the SBD/Family Lines/CSX horns I would hear from time to time as they passed through Yoeman while I was attending the old Yoeman elementary school during my 5th grade year when my Mom moved us temporarily to Lake Freeman's Roth Park in Northern Carroll County. I remember talking her into going to look at the Wabash Bridge at Delphi so I could marvel at it, long before I knew about High Bridge or the others. I also remember another Semephore that used to be at the first crossing North of the Wabash Bridge next to a private drive(complete with one of the old Monon crossbucks), and wonder if it is gone also. I will have to check that one out too. Another trip for another day! Jay

I was up that way the other day and found the bridge still there, and leaning pretty nicely.

That just looks scary! Is the bridge privately owned?
