FAQ for posting images
« on: August 17, 2013, 11:23:53 AM »
Photos can be posted by registered members using the attachment button below the text box when you're posting.

Here are the defined limits:
Maximum file size per attachment: 5mb
Maximum number of attachments per post: 10

One crucial, but undefined (and undefinable) limit:
Maximum pixel size per image if posting multiple images: ~5000x5000px (about the equivalent to a 25mp camera)

This one is important because the server creates thumbnails of each image. In order to do so, it resizes the image. Doing this involves uncompressing, analyzing, resizing, and compressing every pixel. This means it is easy to hit server RAM limits. Even a plain white image that is 100kb in file size but 7500x7500 pixels will overload the memory.

Suggestions for image resizing programs:

Photoshop
The elite level photo-editing program, with a price to match. For just resizing images, this is overkill. There are other adobe products in the photoshop family that are cheaper that can be more cost effective.

Gimp http://www.gimp.org/
An open source and free photo-editor. Almost as capable as photoshop, just not quite as refined interface. Good choice for color correction, resizing, etc.

Ifranview http://www.irfanview.com/
Freeware image viewer with some editing capabilities. Small, fast, and does about any basic operation you need.

Paint
Comes with windows. Do not recommend when there are other far better options available.
