I would assume this means everything sold off or scraped including the railroad itself? Lack of ridership? Insurance costs to high? What happened? Talked to some people down there last year and was told future plans were to continue operations.

I can only imagine what a privately owned operation would pay in insurance.  I know when we have ridden it, the ridership wasn't brisk by any means.  In talking with a gentleman while waiting at Carthage, he said he never knew it existed and lived in Cambridge City!

You would hope someone could step up and save it.

Fuel and insurance are probably the biggest hits in the budget. Perhaps there is some sort of maintenance issue that has arisen too, but I doubt that.

Since this is not a common carrier, at least I don't think it is, does abandonment require any sort of approval?

Also, I think we need to organize a railfest here as a sendoff. This weekend I think is open for me, and the next may work even better. What say ye, board members?

I remember the 80s operation.

It used an old Detroit Toledo Shore Line GP7, some Amtrak coaches purchased out of the grove, and a heavy weight lounge parlor type car.

We got on at Shirley IN and rode well south of the old PRR.

It was just a week or two after the return of Classic Coke, (I remember having one in the lounge car as a kid) so this had to be 1985.

It was a long slow ride between Knightstown and Shirley, about 10mph and a lot of squeaking flanges.

Pics are by Gregory Garbacz off rr pics . net

If in doubt, Notch it out!

Shame that no one can start a museum under a non profit organization to run this line.

BOOM! There goes another huge part of my childhood. Hopefully someone purchases the 45 tonners and that old NYC third rail MU car. That MU car NEEDS to be saved.

Talked to a buddy who lives in Carthage who IS NOT into railroads, and he heard issues with the bridge just outside of town is the reason for closing, and possible health issues with the owner..... but was not sure.

I have some photos from a couple years but would always like to go back down there.  The next two weekends are booked for me though.
If it moves or makes noise...I'm interested!

I posted something about a Railfest on there.  Perhaps I can contact the owner when I arrive back and see what we can do.  I'd love to have this covered one last time!

When and why did they "downsize" into the island operation around Knightstown?
If in doubt, Notch it out!

No idea why, other than cost factors probably.  I want to say early 90's, because I recall the track north of Knighstown still in place when I rode it the first time, I want to say in 1990, but could be off a year or two.

When they first started that railroad up they used a ALCO RS1. I got pictures of it in Shirley.

Good thing I got my Uncle on there when I did! He volunteers for the RR Museum of Pennsylvania. Here's my recent cab ride video from the day he rode on July 20th.

BY THE WAY: If you guys organize a Railfest, one week from this coming Saturday or Sunday would be perfect for me! (I hope)  ;D

I worked for smith grain harvest 1994.Raymond Pasko was the manager at the Sulpher springs elevator. He Said his dad waspart owner of the Farm Bureau CO-OP in Emporia that shipped the first 100 car unit trains like in 1973..They bought a 1 Mile sectiion,( the elevator).Raymond said that the Hoosier Connection had to pay an Interchange fee for cars going across this 1 mile section between Con Rail and Hoosier Connection. If they had gotten this 1 mile section first maybe things would have been different.

I wrote a news article for Eastern Railroad News on the shutdown that is up on their website this morning. Hopefully someone will step in to save the operation. I have never been myself, but I am going to try to get up there before the shutdown to get some pictures.

David, when I get back from my trip I'm going to contact the owners and see about setting something up.  I'd like to have a session for the group here to ride and then one to let photog's like us out and get pictures.

They also had a short section of the P&E in Shirley back in 1985. To the east it maybe only went 400 yards of the diamond in Shirley.

Went a few miles towards Indy, but I can't remember how far.

Diamond was still in and the signals stood too.

If in doubt, Notch it out!
