Antenna Upgrade for Handhelds
« on: August 06, 2013, 01:19:38 PM »
I've had my FT-270R in service for about two weeks, and I'm quite happy with its performance. I am considering upgrading the antenna though. What are other folks using?

This is a little bit long, but they work great.

I use one on my FT-270R and my FT-277R

You want a mag mount, or just a rubber duck?

To be frank, Magmount wise, you can go buy the radio shack version and change the elements to fit the 160 range and it will work great.

No, nothing for my vehicle, as I've got plenty of those. Just a replacement for the stock duck.

Do they still sell those?

For a mag mount there is a 10 dollar quarter wave that works better.
And you can use it for 2 meter ham work.

I got mine from R and L in Hamilton, next to the NS.
If in doubt, Notch it out!

Yup still sell em and I was told to go get it by the radio man himself.  Had a nice magnet too, better than my high end diamond.

I have one magnet mount that is stronger than most permanent ones! I finally glued some styrene sheet to the bottom to decrease its attraction so I could remove it without damaging the paint.

You don't wanna know what it takes to get one of these off.......

And I've seen some permanent Ham antennas and wondered why they don't tear themselves out of the sheet metal!

If you're that serious, why bother with a magnet mount?

I have several antenna's on my car the 3 point magnet mount is used for my HF antenna more stable for it. I have other magnet mounts that work well for vhf and uhf stuff.

Makes perfect sense, as auto sheet metal isn't the thickness it once was.

I remember standing on the roof of my first car, a 1975 Nova, to get a better photo angle. While the roof flexed, it did not dent. I wouldn't do that today, as just leaning on the roof of my Sierra to change a clearance light bulb deformed it more than I would have expected.

Ohh... dare I mention there are QUAD magnet mounts?

These are for tree destroying Antennas.

I used to run a VHF collinear mobile on one from Diamond on a quad. Took two men tugging on it to unseat it.
If in doubt, Notch it out!
