Streetcar tracks unearthed in Richmond?
« on: May 29, 2013, 03:10:11 PM »
The street dept is putting down new asphalt on N 8th St. it looks to me like they've unearthed some earlier pavement that might be covering the trolley line that went south from the depot district.

Maybe it is, but comparing the size of the dump truck to the width of the 'tracks' it looks like they're a narrower than 4'8".

The streetcar track did go south along 8th from E St. The 1936 aerials aren't clear, but I think the track (it was single track here) went down the center of the street, not along one side.

Looking at the google streetview, there does appear to be a line of manholes on that side of the street, so I too am guessing this is a patch over a sewer (storm or sanitary I'm not sure) and not a patch over a streetcar track.

However, while the pavement is up you should check along the center of the street to see if you can find any other signs of rails or patches.

If its anything like the Interurban they found here in Clayton, its gonna be a whole lot farther down. But there's only one way to tell for sure... Grab Shovel!  ;D
