Whose caboose, near Harvester in Ft Wayne?
« on: June 09, 2012, 06:00:43 PM »
Found this on aerials last month, but only just got a chance to check it out today. Don't know why I never saw it before.

It is located off of Meyer Road, just east of the old Harvester plant in Ft Wayne. I think the factory is Zemco Manufacturing. Here's a googlemap of the location: http://goo.gl/maps/HwMa

The aerials seem to show that it wasn't on the spur in 1998, was located at the factory loading dock in 2002 and 2003, and was then moved to its current location by 2005.

Not sure of anything about the caboose. The only legible mark appears to be "MN&S RY" on the air reservoir.

I did find this old TO post: http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?2,396321  Anybody have more info?

MN&S = Minneapolis, Northfield & Southern railroad, whose colors were blue with large red lettering that spelled MNS down the sides of their cabooses.  I don't know too much about this railroad outside that, or how the caboose came to end up in Fort Wayne, but the MN&S ceased to exist in the early 1980's when they were bought by the SOO Line.

Roger Kirkpatrick, the caboose guy, says it belongs to Vince Tippman who owns the former Scout plant where it's parked.

Thanks guys. I hope he doesn't mind my venturing around the parking lot to check out the caboose :)

Not related to the caboose, but what has the Scout plant been used for since IH closed it?

If you contact the Tippman's, they'll more than likely grant permission to gain access onto the property.

For a time, Tippmann was manufacturing some sort of fast food diners there, but I haven't seen any of them lined up outside for a number of years.  I think there are a variety of manufacturing operations going on.

Some of it, including the old Phelps(?) wire plant that they also own across New Haven Ave, they use for storage rental.
