Historic Indiana Cabooses
« on: February 13, 2010, 06:01:03 PM »
Hi,

I'm a new poster with an interest in buggies, cabin cars, cabooses, crummies, hacks, vans, and waycars in Indiana and 49 other states.

So I'm starting a thread dealing with captive/display/museum/park/tourist line cabooses in Indiana!  The following is a listing of such cabooses in Indiana cities starting with the letter "A":

Acton - B&O C2720/X2864, wood, bay window, 8129 S. Mitthoefer;

Anderson? - PRR #?/PC #?, steel, cupola, ex-Military Museum, gone to Delaware Co.?

Angola - NYC 19951, wood, cupola, Ron Dellerr?, US 20 & Rd 200 E, east of town;

Auburn - MNS? #?, ex-fake PRR, style?, Kruse Auction Park, CR 11A near I-69, east of town;
          - NYC or P&LE? 233?, wood, no cupola, Karon's Beauty Shop, 4775 CR 51, for sale;

Aurora - L&N 1295/6295/SBD 16295/fake B&O C3008, steel, bay window, SR 56 east of SR 50;

Austin - NYC? #?/fake NYC 47782/now Lions, steel, small bay window, Depot;

Avilla - B&O C2250, wood, cupola, William Drerup, 1772 CR 750 E;
         - PRR #?, steel, cupola, Kelley Spore, 1825 S. Rt. 3 south of CR 200 S;
         - SOU X705, steel, bay window, as above; &

Avon - PRR 477464/PC/CR 19205, steel, cupola, Peggy Verhonik, 1882 S. 1050 E.

Note that there are about 10 question marks all of which indicate missing or unconfirmed data.  Answers to any of these will be appreciated!

Thanks, Roger

Hi,

Here are the cabooses I list in Indiana towns starting with a "B":

Beesons - TP&W 502 to (IHR) 502 to IBCX 502, steel, bay window, Connersville & New Castle RR;

Blackhawk - L&N #? as Smith Family, steel, bay window, Smith Family Park, 10801 Rt. 159;
               - MILW 01885/991885 as Prairie Rose, steel, bay window, rib sided, as above;
               - SCL 01168, as Smith Family, steel, wide vision, as above, near side entrance.

Bloomington - MONON C-290 & 81403, wood, bay window, Carl First & Century Quarries, Tapp Rd., to MH&TS?

Bluffton - ICG #? to Wabash Central 503, steel, wide vision cupola, Wabash Central Railroad Yard;

Bremen - B&O C2045, wood, cupola, Weldon Miller, 2246 E 2B Rd., ex-Hamlet, North Judson & Walkerton, IN; &

Browntown - SCL 0846 to SBD 20846 to CSXT 20846, steel, cupola, Coal Tipple, West CR 75 N.

As you can see, there are 2 missing numbers and unanswered questions about the 2 MONON woodies.  Any help on these will be appreciated!

Thanks, Roger, Cortez, CO

"Bremen - B&O C2045, wood, cupola, Weldon Miller, 2246 E 2B Rd., ex-Hamlet, North Judson & Walkerton, IN;"

This caboose was not at North Judson. It went from Hamlet (Duck Awald,deceased) to an auction house (Mel Fisher) at Walkerton and then to Bremen.

Not there yet, but McCordsville has an old SCL/L&N Family Lines caboose sitting behind a barber shop, and there is also an old SCL/L&N cab sitting at a greenhouse between Oaklandon and Indianapolis (and it's for sale too).

The SCL 01124/SBD 21125 at McCordsville is rumored to be for sale.  Do you know if that's true?

SCL 01050/SBD 021050 at the closed Abloomin' Nursery was once in McCordsville!

There is a caboose sitting adjacent to the L&I at Franklin, IN just north of the SR44 crossing. There is also a caboose sitting out in a field at the intersection of IN 135 and IN 44.

Shelbyville-1st RR in IN: 7/4/1834. 1st RR abandoned in IN: K&S RR 1854, 26 miles. Making IN RR history. Without photons photography would be a black art. You can never get cornered in the Roundhouse.

Hi,

"And now for the rest of the story" on Indiana C-town cabooses.  I cut off 4 towns when I copied the list for the Cs!

Corydon? - LNAC 1883, wood, small bay window, was at Walnut & Water Sts., now at cement plant or ?   Does anyone know the origin of this car?  I'd guess it was a center cupola car rebuilt to a bay window car, but ...?

Crawfordsville? - N&W 518212, wood, cupola, was at Wabash College or Depot?, now gone to?

Crown Point - BN? #?, steel, wide vision cupola, Hubinger Landscaping, 11191 Broadway/Rt. 53;
                  - EJ&E 180, steel, cupola, Burrell Color Labs, Old Merrillville Road, northeast of town;

Cynthiana - TRRA #?, steel, transfer, construction company compound, Rt. 64 & I-64.

And the Ds:

Decatur - CB&Q 14375? to BN 11092?, wood, cupola, Back 40 Junction Restaurant, 1011 North 13th Street;

Demotte - PRR 477665 to PC/CR 19397 to fake NYC 19397, steel, cupola, Demotte Historical Society;

Dillsboro - C&O 90299, steel,cupola, US 50 & CR 750 East, east of Elrod, once in Vevay, IN;
             - L&N 1425 to L&N 6325 to SBD 16325, steel, bay window, Grelle Rd. & CR 750 E., s. of US 50;

Disko - NKP 1142, wood, cupola?, Siders & Son Gravel, Rt. 114, Wabash, County.

As usual, a few questions accompany this listing of cabooses.  Any help will be appreciated!

Thanks, Roger

Trafalgar is south of the intersection and Franklin is east of there, Roger. I need to get out the old Indiana list of cabooses you sent to me a while back so I can follow the updates here. I will check with the former owner of the LNAC and see if he has any information on the LNAC caboose.
Have a good and safe day!

That's the one, have seen it sitting there for quite awhile now. Was down to Trafalfgar again on Saturday and saw it sitting there at the intersection. Has unusual paint scheme now.
