Information on this site itself
This website is dedicated to all railroads in Indiana, from the earliest experimental track in Shelbyville to today's breaking news to the future. As the Crossroads of America, the state had, and still has, a highly dense rail network that connects the country in every direction. This site attempts to share these stories and information on the internet.
In addition to the major railroads, short lines, regionals, and industrial lines are also covered. The huge Hoosier interurban system is also covered, mostly as history but also covering the sole remaining interurban in the nation.
Most of this site is oriented to railfans, historians, model railroaders, and the like. For the genealogists out there who have wandered onto this site, there are some helpful links here and there (but not employment records or such things).
The site was created in October, 1998 as a class project during my second year at Ball State University. It was originally hosted for free on indiana.railfan.net, and it still maintains a presence there. Moving to its own domain came in early 2007, with the intention of growing the website and keeping it going for many years to come.
